Whitewater Packrafting in River Juutua

A guided river adventure combining paddling and an open-fire lunch

May–October

Head out on a guided packrafting trip along the Juutua River and experience moving water in a fun and approachable way. This adventure combines light whitewater sections with calmer stretches, making it suitable for those looking to try something a bit more active.

Packrafts are lightweight, stable inflatable rafts designed for rivers and varied water conditions. They are easy to handle and well-suited for beginners, while still offering enough responsiveness to make paddling through small rapids exciting and rewarding.

The Juutua River is one of the two main rivers flowing into Lake Inari from the southwest. Although relatively short at around 10 kilometres, it carries water from vast wilderness areas via the Lemmenjoki River system. The river has played an important role for local communities for thousands of years. Archaeological findings near its mouth suggest human presence in the area as far back as 8,000–9,000 years ago. Traditionally, the river has also been known as a good fishing river and an important natural route in the region.

During the trip, you’ll paddle at a comfortable pace, learning how to control the raft and read the flow of the river with guidance from your instructor. The route includes both calm sections and gentle rapids, offering a balanced and enjoyable paddling experience. No prior experience is needed – your guide will teach you the basics and support you throughout the trip. The activity is guided and safety-focused, making it accessible even for first-time paddlers.

Along the way, we take a break to enjoy an open-fire lunch before continuing paddling. This experience is a great way to try whitewater paddling in a safe and guided setting, combining activity, learning, and time outdoors on the river.
