You land at Ivalo. Fifteen minutes later you are inside Western Europe’s largest wilderness areas, and the guide who met your flight is the one who takes you out.
You cross one warm room from the fire to dinner, then carry a reindeer hide onto the terrace and wait for the northern lights to do the magic they do.
Breakfast, lunch and dinner are simply part of your stay — Nordic food from Finnish ingredients, cooked from scratch by the people who wrote the menu, and many of them over an open fire as part of the day’s adventures. So is the winter: its beauty and its fun, on the hotel yard and out at our wilderness camps nearby, with hot drinks and more stories in our traditional Lappish lavvu.
The name
On clear nights, as the cold comes down hard, tiny ice crystals form on every surface and leave a pale veil behind them. Finnish calls that kuura. The house takes its name from it, and its colours from the way the fells turn: kuura settling over the dwarf shrubs and over the rakka boulders while the last of the ruska fades toward a bright snowscape.

The rooms
No two stays feel the same: the rooms wear two Finnish landforms — a sheltered valley and a boulder field — and we set each one up around who is arriving: a couple, a family, grandparents next door.
Ten rooms · a sheltered valley
A kuru is a sheltered valley worn into the fells. These rooms run through soft linen and the greens of moss, earthy and low, and the words the house uses for the effect are levollinen and rauhoittava — restful, calming. The headboard is dark-toned wood, part-upholstered in a putty-coloured textile leather. Nine of the ten sleep two. The tenth is a family room of 25.5 m².
Five rooms · a boulder field
A rakka is a boulder field. Here the earth tones go darker and break into the burnt red of ruska, the autumn colour, and the word the house uses is vaikuttava — striking. The same headboard, upholstered in dark brown. Four of the five sleep two. The fifth is a family room of 24.0 m².
Underfoot, wide oak planks. Quartz worktops with hand-made ceramic pulls; the furniture and the beds are Finnish-made, and in every room hangs a linen-printed work by the artist Nina Ekström, on a Finnish wildlife theme. The bathrooms: soft copper and brown, with rain showers in a copper tone — a touch of luxury.
Two more rooms can take a family by opening into the room next door, which uses both keys.
The house
A few steps past the fire, one warm, open sweep of a room — the kind of place where dinner runs long, and nobody minds. And through one door: the winter wonderland, snow to the treeline, northern lights when the time is right.
Overhead, statement ceiling fittings work with the wall lights; on the back wall, a backlit piece on an aurora theme; underfoot, a textile carpet that takes the hard edge off the acoustics. Translucent-finished wood, the kind where the grain still reads, recurs through every public room in the building.

The food is Nordic, made from Finnish ingredients, and behind the restaurant is a full kitchen cooking everything from scratch.

The eave lights come on, the table is laid, and someone claims the chair by the fire. This is the house on a winter night.
Around it
Kuura stands five kilometres from Ivalo village, surrounded by some of the largest wilderness areas in Western Europe. The nearest lake is Ujejärvi, and there are several more close by.
Rivers run through the area, so there is fishing whatever the season. Urho Kekkonen National Park is within reach. Saariselkä has Europe’s northernmost ski resort, and with it a long snow season. There is gold panning here, and reindeer husbandry, and aurora overhead. In winter the ground carries snowmobile and husky safaris; in spring, summer and autumn the same ground is for cycling, walking, trekking and paddling the rivers. For part of the summer the sun does not set at all. None of it belongs to the hotel — it is simply the country the hotel stands in.
Getting here
Ivalo airport is fifteen kilometres from the door. Ivalo village is five. By rail, trains run from Helsinki to Rovaniemi, the nearest station, several times a day, and the journey continues north from there by bus or hire car or with our Adventure Shuttle running between Rovaniemi, Ivalo and Kirkenes, Norway.
