Spend a day outdoors learning essential bushcraft and survival skills in a hands-on and engaging way. This experience combines practical learning with time in nature, offering useful skills and a deeper understanding of how to manage in the wild.

The day begins by heading out to a wilderness camp, where the focus is on building a functional setup for real conditions. Learn how to choose a suitable campsite, build shelter using a tarp or tent, and create a setup that works in changing weather.

Fire-making is a central part of the experience. Explore different materials and techniques, from preparing wood to using natural fire starters, and learn how to safely build and maintain a fire. The emphasis is on practical, real-world skills.

Navigation brings another layer to the day. Get familiar with map and compass use, while also learning to read natural signs such as terrain, vegetation, and other environmental cues to find direction.

The experience also includes hands-on campcraft skills like knot tying and other useful techniques for outdoor living. Depending on conditions, the day may include activities such as fishing and preparing food over an open fire.

During the day, we also enjoy an open-fire lunch, along with drinks and snacks, as part of the experience.

Throughout the day, your guide provides clear instructions and practical tips, ensuring a safe and supportive environment for everyone.

Suitable for both beginners and those with some outdoor experience, this is a fun and active way to build confidence, learn new skills, and spend a full day outdoors.

Do I need any prior experience?

No prior experience is needed. This activity is a great way to gain confidence in nature. The day is designed to be accessible for beginners, and your guide will walk you through each skill step by step. You can also get more out of it if you already have some outdoor experience.

How physically demanding is this activity?

The day is moderately active. You will spend several hours outdoors, move around the camp area, and take part in hands-on tasks. A basic level of fitness and comfort outdoors is enough.

What kind of skills will I learn?

The day goes deeper into practical details behind essential wilderness skills. You’ll work with real materials and tools, learning how to prepare firewood, use natural fire starters like resin and bark, and ignite a fire using methods such as a fire steel. Navigation training includes not only map and compass basics, but also reading natural signs such as tree growth, anthills, and even the position of the sun or stars. You’ll also see how simple tools like a mirror can be used for signaling in emergency situations. Campcraft skills are practiced through real use, including setting up tarps and shelters with different knots, such as the versatile prusik knot. Depending on the conditions, the day may also include catching and preparing fish, with different ways of cooking over an open fire. The focus is on understanding how and why things work in the outdoors, giving you practical skills that go beyond the basics.

Are there any safety risks in this experience?

Safety is a key part of the experience. Your guide will give clear instructions and supervise all activities, especially when using tools or working with fire. You are expected to follow the guidance provided.

What do I need to bring?

  • Comfortable and weather-appropriate clothing: Dress in layers, including a hat, scarf, and good socks.
  • Sunscreen, sunglasses and mosquito repellent depending on the season and weather
  • Phone or camera (and a power bank if needed).
  • Snacks and water: Snacks are provided, but you’re welcome to pack your own favorites too.

What is the cancellation policy?

  • Cancellation fee of 100% is charged if cancelled 7 days or less before the event.
  • Cancellation fee of 50% is charged if cancelled 30 days or less before the event.
  • Cancellation fee of 30% is charged if cancelled 45 days or less before the event.

Please note

  • Please arrive at Xwander Basecamp 15 minutes before the start time.
  • Basic facilities available at the wilderness camp (including a traditional outdoor toilet).
  • Activities include use of tools such as knives and axes, and working with fire.
  • Participants should be able to follow safety instructions.
  • Family-friendly: This experience is suitable for families, with a recommended minimum age of 15.
  • Physical Requirements: The tour involves spending the day outdoors, so participants should be prepared varying conditions and dress appropriately. Warm clothing and spare layers are recommended.
  • Accessibility: The experience is not fully accessible by wheelchair due to the nature of the terrain and activities. Contact us for accessible options of this tour.
  • Clothing and Gear: Warm clothing and suitable winter gear are essential. If needed, we can provide winter overalls, warm boots, and gloves for an extra fee.
  • Cold weather policy (-25°C and below or challenging conditions): In very cold or demanding weather, we will contact you to assess the situation together before the activity. There is no additional fee if the activity is cancelled by Xwander.
