Aurora Camp & Open Fire Dinner

See the Northern Lights without any light pollution, and enjoy tasty, locally sourced warm meal.

September–March

The evening starts at Xwander Basecamp in Ivalo, then we head to our Aurora spot by Lake Rahajärvi. Just a short drive from Ivalo, the area is wonderfully free of light pollution – a perfect place to embrace the Arctic night.

At camp, warm drinks are served while your guide shares what makes the Northern Lights so special, blending science with local stories. Then we take an easy walk along the shore and through the surrounding forest. When conditions allow, we also step out onto the frozen lake for a wide, unobstructed view of the sky. After the walk, we gather around the fire for a dinner prepared over open flames.

If the Northern Lights choose not to appear, the evening is still very much worthwhile: the soft polar darkness, star-filled or cloudy skies, and untouched nature offer a rare chance to slow down, feel deeply connected to the Arctic, or simply play in the snow under the night sky.

Optional add-ons are available to extend the experience, such as a tent sauna with ice swimming, a sleigh ride, or electric snow scooters.

FAQ

What if the Northern Lights don’t show up?

We can’t promise the Northern Lights every night – they are a natural phenomenon and depend on both solar activity and weather conditions. That said, we plan each trip using the latest forecasts and head to dark, low light-pollution locations to give you the best possible chance. And even on a quiet night, the experience doesn’t disappear: you’ll still get a beautiful evening by the lake with warm drinks, stories and facts about the Arctic sky, a guided walk in the gentle polar darkness, and a dinner cooked over an open fire. With a bit of luck, the stars take the stage. The calm, snowy landscape is a magical moment on its own.

Why choose the Aurora Camp experience?

The Aurora Camp is all about slowing down and enjoying the Arctic night in one carefully chosen location. You’ll spend the evening by the lake with warm drinks, a guided walk, and a dinner cooked over an open fire. With minimal light pollution and a calm setting, it’s a relaxed and immersive way to experience the Northern Lights, or simply the beauty of the polar night if the sky stays quiet. It’s also our best pick for families with the smallest adventurers.
