XCD Skiing in Ivalo

An active way to explore winter landscapes and get a feel for skiing

November–April

Head out on a guided XCD skiing trip through the winter landscapes around Ivalo. This is a fun and accessible way to move across snow, combining the ease of snowshoeing with the glide of skis.

XCD skis are sometimes described as “sliding snowshoes”, but in practice they are versatile touring skis designed for varied terrain. They work especially well in hilly landscapes, where conditions can change between forest sections and more open areas.

After a short introduction, you’ll be ready to head out and explore. Your guide takes you through snowy forests and up to gentle hills, where the scenery opens up around you. The pace is adjusted to the group, so you can keep it relaxed or add a bit more tempo depending on how you feel.

XCD skiing is an enjoyable and slightly playful way to move in winter terrain, offering both stability and smooth movement even when snow conditions vary.

Along the way, we take a break to enjoy hot drinks and a small snack before continuing the journey. Winter forest hiking doesn't get much easier or more beautiful than this!

FAQ

What are XCD skis?

XCD stands for Cross Country Downhill. These skis are sometimes described as “sliding snowshoes” or skin-based skis, as they combine the ease of walking with a smooth glide. They are designed for varied winter terrain, especially areas with small climbs and descents. XCD skis work well in mixed conditions, from packed snow to softer surfaces, and allow you to move efficiently without needing to adjust equipment when the terrain changes.

Do I need special ski boots?

No. These skis are used with regular winter boots, so you don’t need any special ski equipment. This makes the experience easy to try, even if you’ve never been on skis before.

Is XCD skiing difficult to learn?

Not at all. Most people pick up the basics quickly. The skis are stable and forgiving, and your guide will show you how to move, turn, and control your speed. The pace is adjusted to the group, so you can take it easy while getting used to the movement.

What is the difference between snowshoeing, XCD skiing, and backcountry skiing?

Snowshoeing is the simplest way to move in snow, focusing on walking without sinking. XCD skiing adds glide to that movement, making it faster and more playful while still being easy to control. Backcountry skiing is closer to traditional skiing and often requires more technique, especially when moving on steeper terrain or longer routes. XCD sits in between, offering a good balance of ease and versatility.
