Man fishing in snowy environment, on top of the ice

Arctic Fishing & Open-fire Cooking

Try traditional ways of winter fishing and open-fire cooking in the Arctic environment

November–April

Step onto the ice and experience traditional Arctic fishing methods in a hands-on and engaging way. This trip brings you close to local life, combining fishing, learning, and cooking in a relaxed outdoor setting.

The day begins on the ice, where you’ll try classic techniques used in northern winters. Drill your own hole, try ice fishing, and get a feel for how locals catch fish even in cold conditions. We also check under-ice nets and see what has been caught beneath the surface.

The experience continues with handling and preparing the catch. You’ll learn about local fish species such as whitefish, perch, pike, and burbot, and how they are traditionally used.

After fishing, we gather by the fire in a traditional shelter to cook and enjoy a meal together. The highlight of the day is preparing a simple and delicious fish soup over an open fire, using fresh ingredients and traditional methods. Hot drinks and snacks are also available.

This experience is suitable for friends, couples, and families. The atmosphere is relaxed and hands-on, with time to try things yourself, learn something new, and enjoy being outdoors.

FAQ

What if we don’t catch any fish?

Fishing always depends on nature, so a catch can’t be guaranteed. However, there’s no need to worry. Your guide is prepared and brings locally sourced fish to ensure we can still prepare and enjoy a proper meal together. This way, you’ll get the full experience of handling and cooking fish over an open fire, regardless of the day’s catch.

Is it safe to be on the ice?

Yes. Safety is always a priority. Your guide checks the ice conditions regularly and chooses locations where it is safe to operate. You’ll also receive clear instructions on how to move on the ice and stay comfortable throughout the experience.

How do you place fishing nets under the ice?

Under-ice net fishing is a traditional technique where nets are set beneath the frozen surface through holes drilled in the ice. During the experience, your guide will demonstrate how the nets are placed and retrieved, and explain how fish are guided into them under the ice.

Which traditional winter fishing methods will be included in this experience?

During the experience, you’ll get familiar with a few traditional Finnish techniques used in winter fishing and the Finnish terms. Ice drilling is called kairaaminen, ice fishing with a rod is pilkkiminen, and fishing with under-ice nets is known as juomustus. These are all part of local winter life and still widely practiced in the Arctic.
