Haven Tents

Haven Tents is a camping tent brand founded by Derek Tillotson in 2019. Tillotson and his wife McKenzie were on a world tour with their three children in 2018 when they decided to make it their Year of Creativity. While camping on their family ranch in Oregon, Tillotson found it hard to get comfortable in a traditional camping hammock and came up with an idea for a camping hammock tent that would allow for a flat-lay sleeping position. After many prototypes and feedback from friends and family, the Haven Tent was born. The business was launched on Kickstarter in September 2019 but faced immediate delays due to the global pandemic. However, the Haven Tent received positive feedback and has gained popularity among camping enthusiasts. The company has since added more talent to its team to further its goal of making sleep the highlight of camping.

Haven Tents aims to bring the comforts of home to the outdoors with its patented camping hammocks designed to keep users comfortable throughout the night. The brand has introduced new products and accessories, including Haven XL and Haven Safari. Its headquarters are located in Sandy, Utah, and the team is invested in designing products that prioritize making sleep the highlight of camping. The brand tests its gear rigorously to ensure that users can adventure with confidence and get a good night's sleep with a Haven Tent.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Haven Tent differs from a typical hammock in several ways. It has a unique structural design and inflatable sleeping pad that keep the hammock flat and open, which is different from the traditional curved shape of a hammock. Additionally, the Haven Tent has a rainfly that provides protection from bad weather and it can also be pitched on the ground as a bivy tent, which is not possible with a typical hammock.

The Haven Tent has several unique features that set it apart from other camping shelters. Firstly, it has a structural design and inflatable sleeping pad that keep the hammock flat and open, unlike the curved shape of a typical hammock. Secondly, it comes with a rainfly that provides protection from bad weather. Additionally, the Haven Tent can be pitched on the ground as a bivy tent, which is not possible with a typical hammock. Finally, it comes with everything needed for camping in one kit, making it a convenient and practical option for outdoor enthusiasts.

Can the Haven Tent be used as a bivy tent?

Yes, the Haven Tent can be used as a bivy tent. In addition to its unique hammock-style design, the Haven Tent can also be pitched on the ground as a traditional bivy tent, providing versatility and adaptability in different camping situations.

Is it possible to use guy lines on the corner tent loops of the Haven Tent to reduce sway?

To reduce the sway of the Haven Tent hammock, it is possible to attach a piece of shock cord to the corner toggles on the tent body. Avoid using static cord as it may cause the toggle to rip off during strong gusts of wind.

Is it possible to use a hammock stand with the Haven Tent?

Generally, we do not recommend using most hammock stands with the Haven Tent, as the tent hangs slightly lower than a standard hammock. However, we have had some customers who have successfully used stands. If you decide to use a hammock stand, make sure that its dimensions match or are greater than the dimensions of our tent:

Ridgeline length: 108 inches (110 inches for the XL)
Minimum hang height: 48 inches"

What is the weight limit capacity of the Haven Tent?

The weight limit capacity for both sizes of the Haven Tent is 285 lb (129 kg). Exceeding this weight limit could cause the tent to fail. Therefore, it is important to follow our Hang Safe guidelines to ensure safe and proper use of the tent. It's worth noting that we conducted a 1,000-lb stress test on the tent, and it held up without any issues.

What items are included with the Haven Tent?

The Haven Tent comes with all the necessary items to provide a comfortable and enjoyable camping experience:

Hammock Body
Haven Insulated Pad (unless you select "no pad" when purchasing)
Bug net
Rainfly
2 steel carabiners
Tree straps
4 adjustable guylines
4 stakes

Is it possible to use a personal sleeping pad with the Haven Tent?

While it is possible to use a personal sleeping pad with the Haven Tent, we strongly recommend using their Insulated Pad. The pad is a critical structural component that provides the lay-flat design, and it is specifically designed to fit the tent frame perfectly. Its horizontal bevels push against the sides of the tent to prevent you from being wrapped up. If you choose to use a third-party pad, please be aware that it may not fit the tent frame perfectly and may cause discomfort. It could also prevent the tent from functioning as intended.

Should I be concerned if my XL pad folds while using it with the Haven Tent?

As the XL size of the Haven Tent is wider, it is normal for the XL pad to experience some folding, particularly for those with smaller frames. However, to reduce the amount of folding, ensure that the pad is fully inflated using either the PowerPump or pump bag, and add a few breaths of air. While some folding is expected, it should not cause discomfort.

How does the standard rainfly differ from the lightweight rainfly?

The primary difference between the standard rainfly and the lightweight rainfly is their weight. The lightweight rainfly is significantly lighter, weighing almost a pound less than the standard rainfly. However, both options have the same 4000 mm waterproofing to keep you dry in wet conditions.

Can you explain how to use the toggles and loops on the rainfly?

Each rainfly for your Haven Tent is equipped with toggles and loops to secure it in different ways. The rainfly can be rolled up and secured above your ridgeline with the two loose toggles attached to the ridgeline. You can choose between two methods to secure the rainfly depending on whether you want to use the bug net or not.

If you want to secure the rainfly while using the bug net, you can detach the toggles from the ridgeline, zip the bug net closed, roll up both sides of the rainfly from the bottom of the tent to the ridgeline, and then wrap and secure the toggles around each end of the rainfly. When a storm rolls through, you can undo the toggles and batten the fly to the corner toggles of the hammock body.

If you want to secure both the rainfly and the bug net, you can unzip the bug net on each side, roll up both sides of the rainfly and net at the same time from the bottom of the tent to the ridgeline, and then wrap and secure the toggles around each end of the rainfly and net without detaching the toggles from the ridgeline. When a storm rolls through, you can undo the toggles and batten the fly to the corner toggles of the hammock body.

What is the purpose of the grommets on the Rainfly?

The Haven Rainfly has 4 round metal grommets located at each corner. These grommets are intended to be used to secure the fly to the corner toggles to activate "storm mode" during inclement weather.

It's important to note that the grommets should not be used to support horizontal tension by attaching any guyline or cord to them. Doing so can cause the rainfly to tear. Therefore, it's recommended to only use the grommets for their intended purpose of securing the fly to the corner toggles.
