Fatbiking in the snow.

Winter Fatbiking in Ivalo

Beautiful fatbike ride through winter scenery on groomed tracks

November–April

Enjoy cycling on a guided fatbike ride around the village of Ivalo. Wide tires and well-maintained tracks make riding surprisingly smooth and stable, even in colder conditions.

The route takes you through the village, nearby forests, and along the Ivalo River and its old riverbeds, known locally as “Vuopaja”. From the ready-made tracks, you’ll get a glimpse into how the village has developed around the river. Along the way, we also pass flood embankments built around the village centre to protect against spring floods caused by ice break-up. You’ll get a feel for everyday life in a small northern town while enjoying the surrounding scenery.

The pace is adjusted to the group, so you can take it easy or pick up the tempo for a more active ride. Fatbiking is a fun and approachable way to move year-round, and thanks to good grip and stable handling, the ride feels safe and enjoyable even on snowy terrain.

We'll take a break along the route to enjoy drinks and a small snack, giving you time to recharge before continuing the journey.

FAQ

How confident do I need to be at cycling?

You should be comfortable riding a bike on flat ground, but no special skills are required. The fatbikes are stable and easy to handle, and the routes are chosen to be accessible. Your guide will help you get started, and the pace is adjusted to the group, making this suitable even if you haven’t tried winter cycling before.

Is it slippery to ride a fatbike in winter?

Surprisingly, no. In cold conditions, snow becomes dry and compact rather than wet and slippery. The surface offers good grip, and fatbikes are designed for this environment. Their wide tires create a large contact area, giving you stability and control even in subzero temperatures.

What kind of terrain do we ride on?

This tour follows packed winter routes such as village roads, trails, and occasionally snowmobile tracks. These surfaces are firm and easy to ride on, not soft or deep snow. This makes the experience smooth and accessible, even if you have never tried winter cycling before.

Can fatbikes be ridden in deep snow?

Fatbikes are built to handle snow, offering good float and control when conditions allow. On this tour, we focus on well-packed trails where riding feels effortless and enjoyable, rather than challenging off-trail conditions.
