Arctic Ice Floating & Sauna Experience

From cold to hot: experience the embrace of Arctic water and the warmth of a Finnish sauna

November-March

Experience ice floating on a frozen lake, exclusively with Xwander in the Inari region. This is a rare Arctic activity that combines floating in icy water, practical ice safety skills, and a traditional Finnish sauna in one balanced experience.

The adventure begins at our lakeside base with a safety briefing and fitting of a professional thermal survival suit. The suit keeps you dry, insulated, and fully buoyant, allowing you to float effortlessly without swimming skills.

Once on the ice, you step into the water and lean back into a surprisingly relaxing, weightless position. The suit supports your entire body, creating a calm floating sensation while you drift on the surface of the frozen lake.

During the experience, your guide also introduces the basics of ice safety. You will learn how ice thickness is measured, how to perform a self-rescue if you fall through ice, and how to assist someone safely. These practical skills can be life-saving in real winter conditions.

After floating, you can warm up in a traditional wood-heated sauna by the lake. Hot drinks and snacks are served as you relax and complete the experience. On evening departures, the Northern Lights may appear, adding a truly unique finishing touch to the experience.

FAQ

Do I need to know how to swim?

No, this is a safe way to be in the water without knowing how to swim. The thermal survival suit provides full buoyancy, so you float effortlessly without swimming.

Will I get wet or cold?

With the drysuit and warm undersuit, you’ll stay comfortable and insulated throughout the experience. While playing and moving in the water, a small amount of water may enter the suit – this is completely normal and simply part of the adventure. Even then, you’ll remain warm and able to fully enjoy the floating experience.

What should I wear?

We recommend dressing in layers. Wear a warm base layer, a mid-layer such as fleece or wool, and comfortable socks. These will be worn under the thermal survival suit to keep you comfortable throughout the experience. Bring a swimsuit for the sauna and a towel if you prefer using your own.

What if the Northern Lights don't show up during the evening experience?

We can’t promise the Northern Lights every night – they are a natural phenomenon and depend on both solar activity and weather conditions. That said, we plan each trip using the latest forecasts and head to dark, low light-pollution locations to give you the best possible chance. Ice floating is a memorable experience itself, so the evening is still very much worth it: the soft polar darkness, star-filled or cloudy skies, and untouched nature offer a rare chance to slow down and feel deeply connected to the Arctic.
