7 days / 6 nights
Late August – early April

Begin your holiday by exploring Rovaniemi’s main attractions with your guide, and at the end of the day we’ll take you to your accommodation in Ivalo. In addition to Northern Lights excursions, you’ll enjoy a wide range of activities that connect you with local nature and culture.

We reserve the right to modify the daily program during your trip depending on the weather and Northern Lights forecasts, to ensure you have the greatest possible chance to see the auroras.

What to Expect

Highlights of the trip include exploring the science center Arktikum, meeting Santa Claus at his village, and visit to the award-winning Siida Museum, where you can explore the culture and history of the Sámi, the indigenous people of Lapland. A visit to a local reindeer farm will give you insight into the importance of reindeer herding in the North, and the chance to see reindeer up close. This week-long journey offers you the best opportunity to see the most spectacular Northern Lights of your life. Admire the scenery on a snowshoe hike, feel the thrill of speed on a snowmobile, and savour a meal of fish you’ve caught yourself. In the evenings, it’s the perfect time to chase the Northern Lights and unwind in the comforting warmth of a sauna after a day in the winter outdoors.

Itinerary

Day 1 – Explore Rovaniemi’s top attractions and settle into Ivalo

Welcome to Lapland! After arriving at Rovaniemi Airport, your guide will pick you up and you’ll have the whole day to explore the city’s top attractions. Meet Santa Claus in his magical village or enjoy activities in Winter Park, or select a guided tour in Arktikum, a science center that introduces you to the nature, cultures, and history of one of the world’s most fascinating regions. In Rovaniemi, you’ll also have the chance to shop for unique, authentic gifts and souvenirs. In the evening, we’ll provide a comfortable private transfer from Rovaniemi to Ivalo, where you can relax and settle into your accommodation.

Day 2 – Discover Saariselkä: Tundra Trek, Lappish Lunch & Traditional Sauna

After a leisurely breakfast, it’s time to explore the fabled landscapes of Saariselkä. Join your guide for a snowshoe hike across the open tundra, where snowy forests meet sweeping Arctic vistas. You’ll stop to observe and photograph the wildlife, from tiny tracks in the snow to the birds and animals that thrive in this frozen world. Once you’ve worked up an appetite, savor a generous lunch prepared with fresh local ingredients – a true taste of Lapland’s culinary traditions. In the afternoon, unwind in a traditional Finnish sauna, letting the heat melt away the chill of the day. For those seeking an invigorating thrill, step outside and plunge into icy waters before returning to the sauna’s comforting warmth. The day ends peacefully, with rosy cheeks, a light heart, and a mind full of Arctic magic.

Day 3 – Snowmobile Safari & Aurora Camp with Open Fire Dinner

Today’s adventure takes you deeper into Lapland’s wild heart. Dressed in cold-weather gear and helmet, you’ll set off on snowmobiles along forest trails and frozen rivers. As you glide through the vast white landscapes, you’ll feel the freedom of the Arctic winter – an exhilarating experience where fun, sensation, and speed blend seamlessly with the pristine beauty of the snowy surroundings. Keep your eyes peeled along the way; you might even spot a herd of reindeer. As night falls, the magic continues at Aurora Camp. In a traditional Lappish kota tent the fire crackles warmly and your skilled guides will make a dinner for you in open fire. You can also choose to combine your Aurora camp experience with a relaxing tent sauna and ice swimming, a sleigh ride, or a ride on electric snow scooters. With luck, the sky will once again come alive with shimmering curtains of colour as you enjoy the warmth of the fire and the company of your fellow travellers.

Day 4 – Arctic Fishing & Open Fire Cooking

This day offers a taste of Lapland’s timeless traditions. At the peaceful Lake Rahajärvi, your guides will teach you the essentials of winter fishing. Using an auger, you’ll drill your own hole in the thick ice, then help lift the nets from the freezing waters below. If fortune smiles on you, the fresh catch will soon become your lunch. Learn the art of preparing fish over a wood fire, discovering time-honored techniques passed down through generations. Sitting around the fire, surrounded by silence and snow, you’ll savor the freshest fish you’ve ever tasted – one you caught yourself.

Day 5 – A Day to Relax or Seek Your Own Adventures

This is your day to set the pace. Relax and enjoy the comfort of your surroundings, browse local shops for handcrafted souvenirs, or embark on an independent adventure. For something unique, try the eLyly – a quiet, eco-friendly snow scooter perfect for exploring the forest at your own pace. Or embrace the Arctic spirit with a husky sleigh ride, fatbike tour, escape game or a bushcraft skills course to learn the secrets of survival in the far north. Whatever you choose, our team will be happy to recommend activities tailored to your interests.

Day 6 – Discover Inari: Reindeer Farm, Open Fire Lunch & Sámi Museum

Begin with a visit to the award-winning Siida Museum, where you’ll explore Sámi history and culture. Continue with a traditional open-fire Lappish lunch before heading to a local reindeer farm. There, you can learn about herding traditions, feed the reindeer, and enjoy close encounters with these iconic Arctic animals.

Day 7 – Departure (or Optional Extension)

Enjoy a leisure breakfast savouring the calm of the morning. Depending on your departure time, you might choose to spend your last hours skiing, tobogganing, snowshoeing, or fatbiking in the fresh snow. When it’s time, we’ll organize your transportation to the airport or bus station in Ivalo, or, if you prefer, provide a transfer back to Rovaniemi. If you’d like to extend your holiday by returning to Rovaniemi or perhaps continuing on to Kirkenes, we’ll be happy to help you plan and share recommendations for worthwhile travel destinations.

FAQ

Will I definitely see the Northern Lights?

We can’t promise the Northern Lights every night – they are a natural phenomenon and depend on both solar activity and weather conditions. However, we carefully plan our aurora hunts based on the latest forecasts and choose the best locations to maximize your chances. Many of our guests do see the lights during their stay, and even without them, the Arctic night sky is a magical experience in itself.

What kind of souvenirs are worth bringing home from Rovaniemi?

We recommend choosing authentic, locally made products that reflect Lapland’s culture and traditions. Popular choices include handcrafted items made from wood, reindeer leather, or antlers, as well as local delicacies such as berry jams, herbal teas, and traditional sweets. You’ll find a great selection in places like the Arktikum science center’s shop, which specializes in genuine, high-quality products. By choosing these kinds of souvenirs, you’ll take home something meaningful and lasting.

What kind of clothing do I need to bring?

We provide warm overalls, boots, and gloves for all outdoor activities, so you don’t need to invest in specialised gear before your trip. We recommend dressing in layers – a base layer, a warm mid-layer, and a windproof outer layer – for maximum comfort.

I’ve never driven a snowmobile before – is it safe?

Absolutely. Our snowmobile safaris are guided by experienced professionals who will give you clear instructions and safety briefings before you start. The routes are chosen to be safe and enjoyable for beginners, and you’ll be provided with all the necessary gear, including helmets. You can also ride as a passenger if you prefer not to drive yourself.

What happens if the weather is extremely cold?

Your safety and comfort come first. If the temperature drops below –25°C or weather conditions make an activity unsafe, we will reschedule or replace it with an alternative experience. If we have to cancel an activity entirely, there is no extra cost to you.

Can I customize the itinerary?

Yes! The sample itinerary shows what a typical week might look like, but we’re happy to adjust activities to suit your interests and energy levels. Whether you’d like more aurora hunting, cultural visits, or outdoor adventures, our team will work with you to make your holiday exactly what you’re hoping for.
