Winter Adventure Holiday in Lapland

An action-packed holiday week full of thrilling experiences and opportunities to try new winter sports.

6 days

Step into the wild heart of Northern Lapland for an adventure like no other – a week built for you to embrace challenge, discovery, and the rush of the great outdoors.

From the crack of your sled runners over fresh snow to the adrenaline of skiing untouched slopes, this is your chance to push your limits, try new skills, and immerse yourself fully in the Arctic wilderness.

We reserve the right to modify the daily itinerary during your trip depending on the weather and Northern Lights forecasts, to ensure you have the greatest possible chance to see the auroras.

The Right Mix of Challenge and Renewal

Your base is Ivalo – a village on the edge of one of Western Europe’s most remote wilderness areas. Each day brings a new challenge: drive your own sled dog team, try backcountry skiing, ride frozen trails on an electric fatbike, or catch and cook fish through the ice over an open fire.

You’ll balance action with recovery – the speed of a snowmobile ride, the focus of spotting wildlife tracks in the snow, and the heat of a sauna followed by an icy plunge. With a bit of luck, the Northern Lights will light up the sky during your stay.

Itinerary

Day 1 – Arrival in Ivalo & Welcome to Lapland

Welcome to the Far North! Upon arrival at Ivalo Airport – or by bus – you’ll be greeted by your local guide for a smooth transfer to your accommodation. Take time to settle in and get comfortable. Your guide will present the week’s program, answer your questions, and provide your personal cold-weather gear for the days ahead.

Day 2 – Snowmobile Safari & Aurora Camp

Today begins with an adrenaline boost: gear up and ride your snowmobile through pristine forest trails and across frozen expanses. Whether you’re a first-timer or an experienced rider, you’ll enjoy a thrilling blend of speed, sensation, and the serenity of untouched landscapes. Keep your eyes open – a reindeer herd might cross your path. In the evening, the adventure continues at Aurora Camp, deep in the wilderness. Equipped with your headlamp, you’ll step into a traditional Lappish tent where a wood fire crackles and dinner slowly cooks over the flames. Over warm drinks, your guides will share fascinating stories about the Northern Lights. Then, you’ll step outside for a short stroll on the lake and through the forest to observe the skies – and with a little luck, witness the auroras in full splendor.

Day 3 – Dog Sledding Adventure

Meet your musher and their loyal team of Arctic dogs – Taimyr dogs or huskies – for a true polar adventure. After a short introduction, set off into the snow-covered wilderness. Comfortably seated in the sled, you’ll glide through silent forests and open plains, feeling the crisp air on your face. These friendly, hardworking dogs will take you far from the beaten track, where the only sounds are the swish of the runners and the rhythm of paws in the snow. It’s one of the most authentic and exhilarating ways to experience the Arctic winter.

Day 4 – Day in the Tundra

Lace up your snowshoes for a guided trek across Saariselkä’s vast tundra. Between snow-draped forests and sweeping Arctic views, you’ll discover the wild beauty of the Far North at a slower, more immersive pace. Your guide will share insights into the local ecosystem and help you spot wildlife tracks in the snow. Midway through, enjoy a typical Lappish lunch in a wilderness hut. In the afternoon, relax in a traditional Finnish sauna – and if you dare, plunge into icy waters for a rush of pure Arctic vitality.

Day 5 – Arctic Fishing & Open Fire Cooking

At the peaceful Lake Rahajärvi, you’ll learn the art of traditional winter fishing. Using an auger, you’ll drill your own hole in the ice and help lift nets from beneath the frozen surface. Afterwards, discover open-fire cooking techniques as you prepare your catch in a crackling Lappish kota tent. The result: the freshest fish you’ll ever taste – caught and cooked by your own hands.

Day 6 – Backcountry Skiing or Electric Fatbiking & Arctic Tent Sauna

Choose your morning adventure: backcountry skiing through silent forests, carving your own path before descending across untouched snow – or an electric fatbike tour along frozen trails, covering more ground with effortless flow. Both options offer a perfect mix of physical challenge and Arctic beauty. Afterwards, the pace slows. Step into a traditional heated tent sauna, letting the wood stove’s warmth sink into your muscles. When the heat peaks, take the ultimate Nordic plunge into an ice-covered lake – a refreshing, invigorating shock that will leave you energized and connected to the elements.

Day 7 – Departure (or Extension)

After a week of adventure and discovery, it’s time to bid farewell to Lapland. Depending on your flight or bus schedule, you may have time for some last-minute shopping, a short snowshoe, or even one more burst of activity – whether backcountry skiing, fatbiking, bushcraft, ice floating, or even a king crab safari. We’ll organise your transfer to Ivalo Airport or bus station. If you wish to extend your holiday to destinations like Rovaniemi or Kirkenes, we’ll be happy to help plan the next leg of your journey.

FAQ

Is the program fixed, or can I customize the activities during my stay?

The final itinerary will be confirmed just before your arrival. The described itinerary is a preliminary suggestion and can be adjusted and complemented according to your wishes. We can tailor your experience to suit your wishes, with added options such as snowshoeing, an escape game, a reindeer-drawn sleigh ride, or additional Aurora hunting adventures. There is also flexibility built into the program. On Day 6, you can choose between backcountry skiing or an electric fatbike tour. On other days, there may also be optional evening activities or alternative experiences. Let your guide know your preferences and we’ll adapt wherever possible.

How physically demanding is this trip?

Some tours take place outdoors in cold winter conditions, so you should be prepared for low temperatures. This itinerary is designed for travellers who enjoy an active holiday and are comfortable with moderate to high physical activity. Activities like snowmobiling, backcountry skiing, fatbiking, and snowshoeing require a basic level of fitness, but our guides adjust the pace and difficulty to suit the group. If you’re in good health and enjoy outdoor adventures, you’ll thrive.

What kind of clothing and gear do I need?

We provide overalls, warm boots, and gloves for all outdoor activities. We recommend dressing in layers: thermal base layers, warm mid-layers, and a windproof, waterproof outer layer. Bring a swimsuit for sauna sessions, as well as essentials like a headlamp, sunglasses, and lip balm to protect from the cold and sun. A small backpack with your own water bottle is also a good idea.

Is there a temperature limit for the activities?

For safety reasons, if the forecast is colder than –25 °C or weather conditions are otherwise unsuitable, we will cancel and/or reschedule the activity.

What happens if the weather is too extreme?

Safety comes first. If conditions are unsafe – such as temperatures below –25 °C or storms – we’ll reschedule the activity or offer an alternative. Our goal is to keep your adventure both safe and enjoyable, without extra cost to you if we have to cancel due to weather.

Do I need previous experience for skiing, fatbiking, or dog sledding?

No previous experience is necessary – our guides provide full instructions and safety briefings before every activity. Backcountry skiing, fatbiking, and dog sledding are accessible for beginners, but they do involve some physical effort. This trip is a fantastic opportunity to try new sports, push your own limits, and discover what you’re capable of in a stunning Arctic setting. We recommend being prepared to spend several hours outdoors and moving.

Will I definitely see the Northern Lights?

We can’t promise the Northern Lights every night – they are a natural phenomenon and depend on both solar activity and weather conditions. However, we carefully plan our aurora hunts based on the latest forecasts and choose the best locations to maximize your chances. Many of our guests do see the lights during their stay, and even without them, the Arctic night sky is a magical experience in itself.
